LGBT Elder Initiative

CARIE and several other Delaware Valley agencies are forming the LGBT Elder Initiative, a consortium to address issues impacting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) older adults.  The formal launching of the LGBT Elder Initiative will occur at an invitation only summit to be held on October 15, 2010.  The Delaware Valley LGBT Elder Initiative Summit will bring together members of the aging and LGBT services networks along with community members to address the challenges facing older adults in the LGBT communities and the providers who serve them.  The goals of the summit are:

  • To increase aging services providers’ awareness and understanding of the experiences, challenges and issues of older LGBT adults.
  • To increase LGBT older adults’ awareness of services and resources available within the aging services network.
  • To advance advocacy on policy issues of significance for LGBT older adults.
  • To identify specific action steps toward implementation of the outcomes of the Summit.

The LGBT Elder Initiative has also started a blog that will post photos from the Summit as well as reports about the discussions and progress with identified goals.
