DEBORAH GLASS
A CARIE volunteer Long Term Care Ombudsman for more than 15 years, Deborah has used her background as an attorney to passionately advocate for residents’ rights. During the COVID pandemic, when the world was shut down, Deborah stepped up to ensure that residents had access to an Ombudsman and were able to exercise their right to vote and to make their voice heard. We are honored to present Deborah Glass with this award as she continues to exemplify what it means to be an advocate for aging.
Deborah’s commitment and dedication to her role as a Long Term Care Ombudsman are perhaps best expressed by Deborah herself:
“I came to CARIE more than fifteen years ago after being hospitalized. I had an experience with my two roommates who inspired me to become an advocate. The women did not speak English and were treated so poorly that it infuriated me. I was so grateful to learn there was a program like the Ombudsman who could help these women because they had rights!
“I think my background as an attorney has helped me to be a better Ombudsman because it has made me better at problem solving, which is what we do, solving residents’ problems. As a volunteer Ombudsman with CARIE, I have worn many hats including the role of facility visitor, educator for staff and residents, and outreach to long-term care settings ensure residents have access to their voting rights.
“After all these years, I am still an Ombudsman Volunteer because I am continuously inspired by the residents who manage to advocate for themselves despite their circumstances. I also advocate to honor my late mother who always told me that my work as an Ombudsman is so important to each individual.”
Thank you, Deborah, for the care, compassion and effectiveness which you bring to your work on behalf of older adults living in nursing homes and other residential facilities. All of us at CARIE are very grateful for your service!
