Pennsylvania Medicare Beneficiaries Settle Lawsuit to Help Pay Premiums

Community Legal Services (CLS) of Philadelphia and the Center for Medicare Advocacy filed a lawsuit to help low-income Medicare beneficiaries in Pennsylvania receive help in a timely way from the Medicare Savings Program. Medicare Advantage White Paper

Last fall, Medicare beneficiaries in Southeastern Pennsylvania were facing a loss of several Medicare Advantage plans impacting over 64,000 beneficiaries and overwhelming local SHIP/APPRISE programs. CARIE’s Dorothy S. Washburn Legislative Committee wrote a Medicare Advantage White Paper that was sent to numerous officials at CMS and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging. The paper includes recommendations based on the collective experience of the committee in working to assist these beneficiaries.

Michele Mathes, JD, CARIE’s Director of Education and Research, has written an ethics of long term care concept paper, “Relationship, Responsibility and Commitment: Cornerstones for an Ethics of Long Term Care,” that describes a framework about how to make ethical decisions in long term care settings.
